This herb is one of the most widely used medicinal herbs today. Parts used are the leaves and sap. Aloe Vera is native to South Africa and Arabia Peninsula but is now found anywhere in Asia, North Africa and southern parts of the Mediterranean.
Ancient Egyptians used it as a skin soother in treating wounds from poisonous arrows. Presently, is used for treating several skin problems including burns and is also used as an intestinal cleanser and for cosmetic preparations.
Aloe Vera is used for minor burns, sunburns and rashes. In cosmetics, it is used as hair gel, shampoo and conditioners, lotions, perfumes and soap and facial creams and tissues. It is also said to stimulated hair growth if you apply the sap to the scalp and massage the affected area.
Perhaps the most common and simple use is to apply the leaves on the skin if you have a sunburn or other mild burn. It provides a soothing effect and moisturizes the skin. It can also be used for cuts, scratches and insect bites. The best way to use it is to apply the sap to the skin or scalp. Aloe Vera is also used as a laxative.
This is a good house plant to have around. Just make sure you keep it in a partially sunny place with well drained soil. |
