Basil is a bushy sweet scented bright green plant with ruffled leaves. It was originally found in Asia and is common used in culinary preparations. Parts used in this versatile plant are the leaves, seeds and oil.

It has antiseptic properties for the treatment of congestion, coughs and colds and is also used for its antibacterial effects. Research has found this herb to aid in the reduction of blood sugars.
The herbal tea can be used to help reduce chest congestion, help breathing and boost energy. The tea and the leaves, when used in cooking will help reduce phlegm, promote sweating and helps elevate the spirits and has also been used to fight fatigue and reduce nervous tension. In culinary preparations basil leaves enhance flavor in meats vegetables and soups and is used in Italian dishes including tomato and pesto sauces - often combined with oregano. This herb is used to flavor fish, poultry, lamb, white beans, veal, rice tomatoes, cheese, soups and eggs among other culinary dishes. Its flavor intensifies while cooking and is also used in vinegar and teas. For a refreshing drink, the seeds can be soaked in water and served as refreshment.
In commercial products the oil is used in making perfumes, bath preparations, aromatherapy and even insect repellents. It is also used in dental preparations such as gargles to fight plaque that forms between the teeth.
