Description
& Use

Bilberry is a sweet, bluish black deciduous shrub with a creeping rhizome, alternate ovate bright green leaves with pale pink flowers. This herb grows predominately in Northern Europe, Asia and North America and is closely related to the American Blueberry.

Parts used are the dried and ripe leaves and fruits. The active constituent is “anthocyanosides” which is a good antioxidant property for medicinal purposes. Herbal properties work on the capillaries (tiny blood vessels) that connect to the eye, skin and other parts of the body, which helps promote good blood circulation.

Bilberry has anti-inflammatory, anti septic and anti diarrhea uses and has anti astringent properties. This herb is used to treat constipation and vomiting. The leaves of this herb are used for the prevention of diabetes mellitus and are effective for eye problems such as night blindness and glaucoma.

This herb is also used for gout, urinary tract infections, kidney problems, menstrual irregularities, chest pain, stomach problems, hemorrhoids and high cholesterol. Externally Bilberry is used for mouth, and pharynx inflammation, gum disease, dermatitis, varicose veins and other skin problems such as bruises.

The herb’s fruits are used in salads, muffins, jams, syrups and desserts. They are also used in wines and for flavoring liqueurs. The dried fruit can be found in baked goods and cereals. The leaves are used in teas.
