Description & Use |
A tall perennial medicine plant with long white flowers, leaves are ovate, smooth with toothed margins. Native to Canada and the U.S. it is now cultivated in Europe extensively for herbal products. This herb is known as bugbane, because of its strong odor from the flowers and roots, which are unpleasant to insects. The Latin word cimicifuga means bug repellant. The Native American dialect Algonquian translates Cohosh to mean “rough.”
Parts used are the rhizome and root. Black Cohosh is a bitter herb used as a medicinal stimulant for asthma, bronchial problems, whooping cough, high fevers and uterus problems. Herb is used to relieve dysmenorrhea, menopausal complaints, premenstrual tension and some nervous tension problems. Its main use is for menopausal problems.
