This herb is native to North Europe and Asia. Its clumped slender bulb with flat green leaves have an onion smell and flavor. Chives are known to survive winter temperatures of -40° to -50°. They are found in Alaska, Siberia and Newfoundland.

Parts used are the leaves, bulbs and flowers. This herb is similar to other Allium species. Chives are used as a vermifuge. When used with foods and tea it has been known to lower blood pressure. Its other use is as a pesticide.

In the kitchen, Chives are used for flavoring chicken and other meat products. It is also used as a garnish in salads, used in dips, mashed potatoes, egg dishes and Italian dishes. This herb is easy to grow.

Too much Chives may cause stomach pain.
