Description
& Use

Dong quai is part of the Parsley family native to East Asia. The numerous species of this herb are used for different medicinal purpose. One example is European angelica, which is used to fight infections. American angelica is used for digestive disorders associated with gas pain, bloating and heartburn. Japanese angelica is used medicinally the same as Dong quai.

Dong quai is very popular in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong and Singapore and China. After Ginseng, Dong quai is considered one of the most popular herbal tonics in China. The root of this herb is the part mostly used. Dong quai means “proper order” and was given that name because the dried roots build and restore order to promote health to the body.

Dong quai’s herbal properties possess several curative effects to help boost the body’s immune system. This herb is also used for irregular heartbeat, intestinal problems, and liver and kidney problems. Females use Dong quai for infertility, menstrual cramps and irregularities, menopausal syndrome, heart blood pressure, eye inflammation, muscular and nerve pains, fungal infections, tissue swelling and as a tonic after childbirth.

Side Effects

Dong quai is not intended for those with diarrhea, viral infections, pregnant women, lactating mothers and those with heavy menstrual flow.
