Botanical Name: Echinacea angustifolia

Also called Purple Coneflower.

Family of Asteraceae

Description
& Use

Greeks called this herb "Echinos" (Hedgehog.) Various species were used by North Americans and Europeans. Echinacea is considered the most popular herb in the United States behind Garlic. Parts used are the root and rhizome and Echinacea is usually marketed in capsules, tablets and lozenges. You should only take it during the illness, not for prolong periods since your immune system does need a permanent immune system boost and it loses its effectiveness over time.

The popularity in this herb stems from its ability to boost the immune system. It is used most often when someone has a cold or flu. It is said to be good for upper respiratory problems and supposedly inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungal infections.

This perennial is easy to grow in the garden.

Side Effects

Diabetics and Sclerotic people should avoid using this herb since it is known to interact with their medication.

Should not be used by those who have certain allergies.
