Description
& Use

Rose hip grows in Europe, North Africa, Western Asia and North America. It has scented long pedicled pale pink or white flowers. Past civilizations used rose hips to treat various ailments. Parts used are the petals, fruits (hip) and seeds. Rose hip is a stimulant herb rich in vitamins especially vitamin C which aids in the prevention and treatment of colds and influenza and other ailments. It contains tannins, an active ingredient in antioxidant flavanoids and pectin, which is effective in treating edematous patients with diuretic and or constipation. Botanically, this plant is considered to be the richest source of vitamin C.

The seed of rose hip is commonly used for treating urinary tract ailments, rheumatism, osteoarthritis and sciatica. This herb is a good anti-inflammatory for swelling, urinary bladder infections, joints and stiffness of muscles. It can be found in baby formulas, cough and other syrups, vitamin tablets, and herbal preparations, and is used to flavor medications.

For culinary use, this herb can be found as an ingredient in jams, jellies, marmalades, and soups. It is also used in teas and other food supplements. If used in recipes, the seeds should be removed since it’s not too palatable to the digestive system. Rosa rugosa is considered the better quality one for culinary use. Do not use aluminum pans or utensil since they can destroy the vitamin C.

If you are lucky enough to be in a region to grow this plant you should select a disease resistant variety and do not use pesticides that are harmful to consumption. They require deep watering and plenty of sun but the rewards are obvious.
