Descriptions
& Use

Rosemary comes from the Mint family and is related to oregano, basil and marjoram. It derives its name from the Latin word Ros (dew) Marinus (sea) or dew of the sea and is found growing naturally by the ocean. In ancient times it was used medicinally and for cooking. In more modern times its main use has been for culinary dishes but research continues in its use for healing, cosmetics and food preservation. As a preservative, it has been found to reduce bacteria related to food spoilage so research in that area looks promising.

Medicinally it is used for headaches, nervous tension, indigestion and cold remedies and is considered beneficial due to its antioxidant properties. Externally this herb is used for hair regeneration, bone and muscular pain. Centuries ago it was known as the "herb of remembrance" and was used for memory lapses. Commercially, it is used in skin care oils, skin irritant products, hair products and graying hair, repellants, moisturizers and can be found in scents and perfumes and due to its scented essential oils, it is used in Aroma Therapy.

For culinary use, this herb is used as a preservative, to complement pork, veal, soups, beef, lamb, salads, fish, poultry and other flavoring agents. It also works to enhance cheese, vegetable, potatoes, breads and eggs. You can use the fresh leaves simply by stripping the leaves of the twigs and chopping them. Dried leave are fine but get the freshest product available. It is also used as decorations for wedding ceremonies. In the garden, rosemary is easy to grow depending on your growing region. Since it is best used fresh, this herb should be included in the garden.
