Botanical Name: Valeriana officinalis

Family of Valerianaceae

Other names include garden heliotrope, moon root, all heal, wild valerian.

Description
& Use

Greek physician Dioscorides named valerian "phu" because of the herb's stinky smell. Parts used include the root, rhizome and oil. The herbs' volatile oil is named "isovaleric acid." In ancient Greece this herb was used in aromatic baths because of its tranquilizing effects. This was done by making a fresh infusion or by placing fresh or dried herbs in the bath tub.

Even with its smell it has numerous medicinal values. It is used for headaches, insomnia, eye vision, and to calm the nerves. Valerian is also used externally for skin infections and minor injuries. In Europe it is popularly used as a sedative and to relieve pain and tension of the muscles. Its most often use is for insomnia. For a botanical tea, do not use boiling water since it will damage the lighter oils found in this plant.

Side Effects

Use sparingly since this herbs' volatile oil has a soporific effect (induces sleep.) Do not combine Valerian herb with other sleep inducing medication. Use extreme care if used in a bath.

Always consult your Health Care Provider.
