Growing herbs in the home garden is easy and rewarding. Some may worry that plants won’t grow and may shy away from starting an herbal garden. Don’t let that stop you – just get that herbal garden started! The best way to grow your herbs is to keep it simple. If you are a beginner don’t worry about soil composition, composting and all that stuff. Clear a space, plant the seeds and follow the directions that came with the seed packet. As you learn you can then advance and start worrying about soil, nutrients and the other stuff. If you have a short growing season you can start the seed indoor by germinating them. A simple method is to put the seeds in wet toilet paper like a sandwich and keep it moist for about three days. Once the seeds have germinated you can put them in potting soil in plant trays. This will let it grow while the weather warms up. Once the weather is warm and you have your herb garden cleared, you can transplant your plants. After transplanting you will need to water often for a few days. This is because your herbs may go into shock due to the transplant. Also, when you do transplant your herbs, try to do it in the evening and again water it thoroughly.
Try starting with easy to grow herbs such as chives and thyme; shy away from cilantro if you are a beginner, it’s a little fussy. If your first batch is successful then you will have time to read up on some advanced methods of growing herbs as you sit there and enjoy your herbal garden! You see, keep it simple, learn, improved and enjoy! A good idea may be to find out what herbs grow well in your region and are native to your area. You can probably find information on your native herbs at your library, or you can do a search on the Internet for phrases such as “herbs in Virginia” or “native plants in Florida.” Your library may have better information though.
